The Manhattan Project’s Indispensable Man General Leslie R. Groves believed that to achieve success that he should start with superb and gifted people and that young people would normally be more energetic, confident, and curious and thus be more likely to work harder and longer.
General Groves was a career military engineer during World War II and was responsible for the construction of the Pentagon and numerous installations and factories that played major roles in the Manhattan Project’s making of the Atomic Bombs that were dropped on Japan in 1945.
Fat Man and Littbo…Beneath the ATOMIC CITY is a novel that describes the 1927 birth of George Thomas Moneypenny into a coal mining family living in Hardburly, Kentucky. It details the death of Malcom Moneypenny and the family's move to Tennessee and the unlikely pairing of Littbo Moneypenny with the famous General, and how everyday life twisted and turned until the entire secret mission unraveled at the seams and completely re-directed the outcome of the war effort.
The novel traces personal life in the Atomic City from illicit affairs, moonshining and bootlegging, secret underground bunkers, the purchase of 1200 tons of uranium ore from a warehouse in New York, and to the final military battles on the Island of Tinian, and the flight of the Enola Gay over Hiroshima, Japan.

Because of who the author is, I was expecting a lot more from this novel. The story is nicely filled with a lot of historical detail, and the idea of following a teen country boy finding himself in the middle of not only the Manhattan Project, but some of its secrets, kept my interest. BUT, at the end of the novel the story turns into alternate history, changing what really happened. I have no problem with alternate history. I just finished THE BERLIN PROJECT by Benford which is a well written, detailed alternate history of the Manhattan Project. But to suddenly change history at the end of the story without going into why and what happened as a result of the change, left me disappointed. If you change it, make it count for something! If you are into Oak Ridge, and/or The Manhattan Project, check it out but be ready to be left hanging and unsatisfied.Product details

Fat Man and Littbo Beneath the Atomic City eBook Dave Westcott Reviews
Just reading the intro it sounds amazing, cant wait for the hard copy.
Wow... I haven't read a book in 6 years and I'm so glad I started back up with this book. It was so intriguing. I literally could not put it down. As the story unraveled I would expect a grey area, and then an exciting part, then grey, etc. like most books usually have. Not with this book, it continued to climb and get better through all 250 pages. Just when I thought I had the whole book figured out, it would do a complete 180 leaving me surprised and anxious for what's next. I'm so amazed at how he was able to mix the actual history piece and his fictional story together so well. I loved how the pictures were used to help set the mood as if I was really there. Such a great book but I'm actually depressed it's over. Sequel ASAP.
Brings back many memories and a good story to booy.
Okay, the author is an old friend so I may be a bit prejudiced, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Fabulous era, interesting characters and a flowing story.
Loved it!! So many twist and turns and an amazing ending. Would love to hear more about these characters and their adventures. Westcott worked hard to get facts correct, but then stretched others to make the story interesting and inserted photographs to backup the story. Positively FIVE STARS!!
